Carnot is developing hydrogen engines with key components manufactured from ceramics able to withstand fuel combustion temperatures, eliminating the need for cooling systems and doubling the efficiencies of modern engines. The company argues that modern engines waste on average one-third of fuel energy to cool systems that stop metallic components from melting. Carnot claims that its engines eliminate this waste doubling efficiency, halve fuel costs and CO2 and achieve net-zero operation by operating on biofuels and hydrogen benefiting the long haul transport, marine and primary off-grid power markets. Carnot has raised over £600,000 including a pre-seed round in 2020 for £357,000 at a pre-money valuation of £2 million, a £300,000 Innovate UK grant and another £300,000 Eureka Eurostar’s grant. Carnot has a 5-year, 3-phase exit strategy and will begin licensing its IP at the end of 2023 at which point it will begin generating revenue. It will eventually look for acquisition from one of its manufacturing partners in 2025 after demonstrating industry acceptance of its technology.

Carnot is an engineering company that is developing biofuel and hydrogen-powered Carnot engines with the aim of reducing global CO2 levels by 13%. The company asserts that metal engines, unable to withstand fuel combustion temperatures, waste one-third of fuel energy to cooling & have operating efficiencies of only 30%. Carnot argues that its engines can bring operating efficiencies up to 70%, halving fuel costs. It also intends to develop clean, secure, and affordable global off-grid energy solutions and provide disruptive technologies that are both commercially viable and environmentally friendly. Carnot was awarded a £157,000 Innovate UK Grant to develop an energy access solution in Sub-Saharan Africa. It was also awarded a place on OGTC Tech X accelerator, in partnership with organisations like British Petrol (BP), Equinor, and KPMG with a £100,000 funding. The company will use the investment to bump up the maximum theoretical engine efficiency to ~85%.

Aiming to prevent further deterioration and leakage of water and sewerage pipes, Aqualiner has developed their Melt in Place Pipe (MIPP). This patented technology consists of a sock insertion, which when heated, expands and melts onto the inner pipe and forms a solid glass-reinforced thermoplastic layer. This process can increase the longevity of existing pipes and is the only product of this type to be approved to be safe-for-use in drinking water pipes. The UK has more than 251,000 miles of water pipes, where almost 75,000 miles of pipes are classed as damaged. Aqualiner firstly plans to sell the initial equipment in return for a small profit margin, but the materials and consumables used in the process will be sold to the licensed contractor directly as a second income stream. The third source of revenue is derived from fees charged to International territorial licensors for any Aqualiner sales. The product has been developed with support from Anglian Water, Severn Trent Water and Yorkshire Water and is approved to be installed in US drinking water pipes.

Greenwall Environmental Group is a company engaged in making devices that can minimise non-biodegradable waste. It argues that asbestos remains the largest occupational killer in the UK today. Its product, Asbestosprobe, aims to change this situation. The company asserts that Asbestoprobe is arguably the world's first handheld analyser specifically designed to detect asbestos in real-time. It argues that current methods of detecting and recording the presence of asbestos are costly, invasive and slow. Asbestoprobe uses a point-and-click approach utilising NIR Spectroscopy and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to analyse the presence of asbestos in two minutes via the Asbestoprobe App. Greenwall plans to provide an annual software licensing model which grows through recurring revenue year on year. It endeavours to be a segment leader in the projected $1 billion global asbestos management market. The company will use the investment to grow its business across different verticals.

Thermulon builds aerogels for building insulation and aspires to disrupt the global thermal building insulation market that was worth $30 billion in 2020. It claims that its aerogels are the first to beat the tradeoff between fire safety, thermal performance and price with the ability to fight climate and fire-safety emergencies. Thermulon cites its research with Ryder Architecture stating that using Thermulon's products on a new apartment block could save 100mm in insulation thickness compared to mineral wood and potentially add floor space equivalent to 7 additional 1-bed flats making safe insulation a profitable move for developers. The company was awarded £550,000 in InnovateUK equity-free grants, garnered a project to insulate 10,000 social houses over the next 5-10 years, and has been felicitated with awards from the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Royal Academy of Engineering. The company states it will use the investment to grow its team, file its first patent, certify its product and get Thermulon’s insulation on walls.
